Medicare Rebates

Medicare offers rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. In order to obtain Medicare rebates you need to first visit your General Practitioner (GP) and explain your mental health concerns and obtain a referral. It is usually necessary to book a longer consultation with your GP so that they have adequate time to develop a care plan with you. Your GP will complete a “Mental Health Care Plan” with you, and also provide you with a letter of referral. You must bring these documents to your first session in order to access your Medicare rebate. Please note you are able to take your letter of referral to any Psychologist (even if it is addressed to a specific Psychologist Medicare allows it to be valid/used with any Psychologist registered with Medicare).

As of 01/07/2025, Medicare will rebate:

  • $145.25 per standard consultation with a Clinical Psychologist
  • $98.95 per standard consultation with a Clinical Psychology Registrar/General Psychologist

Private Health Rebates

Rebates may also be available from your Private health insurance. The amount of rebate available varies across different health insurance providers and levels of cover. If you would like to know the amount of rebate prior to your first session you will need to contact your health fund.
